Look for Powerful Suctions
Make sure the product that you search has pretty powerful suctions. Cyclonic central vacs, uprights or canisters it doesn't matter as long as they have a powerful inbuilt motor. Read this how to measure real power of a vacuum motor for more information.
Larger dust bin/bag capacity
Unlike the more common dust, pet hair or rug fibers can fill up the dust chamber pretty quickly. So always go for a bigger product which has a larger bin or a bag capacity.
Look for Best Dirt Filters
HEPA filters are among the best of its kind. It has a lot of benefits from the user point of view.

*. Re-usable/washable (some products even have HEPA filters with lifetime warranty).
*. Highly efficient at blocking allergens or dust mites, etc.
So if you have asthma then they can be a handy choice. They have several classes which varies from H10-H14 which are set according to the United States Department of Energy (or DOE for short) and the higher the class the better.
And when needed to clean you can easily remove them and can clean using shampoo solution, etc without having to worry about damaging it (but look for the manual first). Again when concerning the types and the amounts of dust (including hair and puff, etc) the filters have to be the best performing ones otherwise you'll have to perform frequent blocking which is not the most enjoyable task anyway.
The brushes/tools
Now it is important to ask or read the manual and make sure it has some especial tools or the cleaning head has robust brushes to achieve better pet hair removal from rugs and carpets (which are usually the hardest). They usually come with a tool called "power nozzle" which can differ from the manufacture to the manufacture but keep that in mid as well.
Dyson for instance has built in cleaning nozzle tools such as the flat out which is built exactly to accomplish this purpose.
Noise
So let's brief things a little. We need a powerful vacuum, with motorized brushes or attachments and power usually means loud!. So look for a well sealed, professionally built (with durable outside and inside materials) which can reduce the heavy noises dramatically. Otherwise you'll have to wear an ear bud which can be pretty annoying.
So as promised I have picked one of the highly recommended products that falls into the above category. But again remember this is not the only one there are others as well.
